Sentence Builder is a communication aid app. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what the app does with information when you use it.
Who this policy is for
This app is designed for use by children and adults with communication disabilities, often with the help of a parent, caregiver, or teacher. If you are a parent or guardian reviewing this on behalf of a child, this policy is written for you.
What the app does
You point the camera at an object. The app identifies the object and suggests short phrases (like “I want this” or “What is this?”) with a picture and text-to-speech, so the person using the app can communicate more easily.
What information the app uses, and what happens to it
Photos you take. When you take a photo, it is sent once to our server to identify the object in it. Our server sends the photo to OpenAI, a third-party AI company, to analyze what’s in the photo. Our server does not save the photo itself. It only keeps a one-way scrambled fingerprint of the photo (which cannot be turned back into the photo) and the AI’s text description of the object (for example, “pen” or “cup”) — this lets the app reuse results instantly if the same or a similar object is photographed again, so it doesn’t need to ask OpenAI (and pay for) the same question twice.
Generated pictures. The little animated pictures shown for each phrase are generated by AI from a text description of the object — not from your actual photo. They’re generic illustrations (for example, a generic drawing of “someone holding a pen”), not a picture of you, your child, or anything in your actual photo. These generic illustrations are saved on our server and reused for everyone who photographs a similar object, which is why suggestions sometimes appear faster than the first time.
Your name, language, and preferences. If you fill in the profile screen (name, preferred language, communication preferences), that information is saved only on your own device. It is never sent to our server or to anyone else. If you delete the app, this information is deleted with it.
Sharing a message. If you tap the share button on a message, your device’s own share screen opens (the same one used by every app on your phone) so you can send the photo and phrase via text, email, or another app of your choosing. That’s a normal action you take yourself, on your own device — we don’t see or control what happens after that.
What we don’t do
- We don’t require creating an account or signing in.
- We don’t collect names, emails, or contact information, unless you choose to type your name into the local profile field described above (which stays on your device).
- We don’t use advertising or ad-tracking of any kind.
- We don’t use analytics services that track individual people across sessions or devices.
- We don’t sell or share information with anyone except as described above (sending a photo to OpenAI to identify what’s in it).
Third parties involved
OpenAI processes photos (to identify objects) and generates the illustrated pictures (from text descriptions). OpenAI’s own privacy policy, available at openai.com/policies, governs how they handle what we send them. We do not control OpenAI’s own data retention practices and encourage you to review their policy directly.
Hostinger hosts our server and database. They do not have access to the contents of what’s stored beyond standard hosting-provider access to their own servers.
Children’s privacy
This app is intended to be used by children with the involvement of a parent, guardian, teacher, or caregiver. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children beyond what’s described above (a photo, processed once and not retained by us; an optional on-device-only name field). If you are a parent or guardian and have questions or concerns about your child’s use of this app, please contact us using the information below.
How long information is kept
- Photos: not stored by us at all (see above).
- Object descriptions and generated illustrations: kept indefinitely on our server so the app can respond faster for everyone, since they don’t describe or identify any specific person.
- Your local profile (name, language, preferences): kept on your device until you delete the app or clear its data yourself.
Your choices
- You can use the app without ever filling in the profile screen.
- You can delete the app at any time, which removes everything stored on your device.
- To ask about anything stored on our server related to a specific photo you took, contact us using the information below — though as explained above, we don’t retain photos or anything that identifies who took them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
